About Russe
Russe (Ruse) is the largest Bulgarian Danube port and the standard departure point for the day excursion to Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, perched above the Yantra gorge. The town itself has an unusually elegant Viennese-style centre — broad squares, neo-baroque ministries, and the Monument of Liberty — built during the brief flourish of Bulgarian independence after 1878. Some itineraries substitute a visit to the rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo, a UNESCO site of medieval frescoes.
