About Mannheim
Mannheim sits at the Rhine-Neckar confluence and is unusual among German cities in that its old town is laid out as a numbered grid of square blocks rather than streets. The Baroque palace at one end of the grid is now the university and is one of the largest in Europe. Most cruise lines use the call as the launching point for a Heidelberg shore excursion — the castle and Philosophenweg are forty minutes inland by coach — rather than a city tour of Mannheim itself.
