About Iron Gates
The Iron Gates is the dramatic 130-kilometre defile where the Danube cuts through the southern Carpathians between Serbia and Romania, narrowing in places to barely 150 metres between sheer 300-metre cliffs. Ships transit in daylight so passengers can see the colossal modern carving of the Dacian king Decebalus on the Romanian wall and the Roman Tabula Traiana plaque on the Serbian side. The two locks at the Đerdap I dam lift the ship some 35 metres in a single stage and are themselves a draw for the sun deck.
