About Avignon

Avignon's Palais des Papes — the colossal fortified Gothic palace built by the seven popes who ruled from here between 1309 and 1377 — is the centrepiece of every Rhône itinerary. The famous Pont d'Avignon (the Pont Saint-Bénézet of the children's song) stretches half-way across the river and stops mid-stream where four of the original twenty-two arches survive. Most operators berth at the Allées de l'Oulle quay just outside the medieval ramparts and walk passengers in through the Porte de l'Oulle.
