About Arles
Arles is the southernmost cruise berth on the Rhône and was a major Roman town — the amphitheatre, the theatre, the cryptoporticus and the necropolis at Les Alyscamps are all UNESCO sites. Van Gogh painted some 300 works here in 1888-89, and the Espace Van Gogh hospital courtyard he depicted has been recreated as a garden. The Camargue wetlands south of town, with their pink flamingos and wild white horses, are the standard alternative excursion.
