About Trier
Trier is the oldest city in Germany, founded by the Romans in 16 BC, and contains the largest collection of Roman remains north of the Alps — the Porta Nigra gate, the imperial baths, the basilica throne room and the amphitheatre are all UNESCO sites. The Romanesque cathedral and the adjoining Liebfrauenkirche, plus Karl Marx's birthplace on Brückenstraße, complete the standard walking tour. Cruise vessels dock on the Zurlaubener Ufer a short walk north of the old town.
