About Pakokku
Pakokku is the working market town on the west bank of the Irrawaddy upstream of Bagan, famous in Myanmar for its tobacco-growing and for the long pedestrian bridge that connects it to the river-island farms. Most cruises pair the call with a rickshaw tour of the market, the cheroot-rolling cottage industry and a visit to a local monastery school. The town gives its name to the Pakokku monks who began the 2007 Saffron Revolution against the military government.
