About Mingun
Mingun is the Irrawaddy village just upstream of Mandalay, dominated by the unfinished Mingun Pahtodawgyi pagoda — a colossal brick stupa begun in 1790 that was abandoned when the king died, leaving a 50-metre cube cracked through by an 1839 earthquake. The Mingun Bell, weighing 90 tons, was the largest functioning bell in the world for over a century. The whitewashed wedding-cake Hsinbyume Pagoda, modelled on the cosmic Mount Meru, sits a short walk along the riverbank.
