About Edfu
Edfu's Temple of Horus is the best-preserved ancient temple in Egypt, built by the Ptolemies between 237 and 57 BC and excavated in the nineteenth century from beneath the village that had grown over its roof. The pylon, the great court, the hypostyle halls and the central sanctuary still hold their original roof and most of their carved relief — the falcon-god Horus stands at the entrance in monolithic black granite. Cruise passengers reach the temple by horse-drawn caleche from the Nile dock.
