About Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is the pair of colossal rock-cut temples built by Ramses II in the thirteenth century BC at the southern frontier of the New Kingdom — the four 20-metre seated statues of the pharaoh stand guard at the Great Temple façade. Both temples were cut into blocks and reassembled 65 metres higher up the cliff in the 1960s when the Aswan High Dam created Lake Nasser. The site is reached by an optional dawn flight or coach convoy from Aswan.
